Driving Force
Do you drive and own your own car?
If you have some time to spare during weekdays (& some weekends) we would love to hear from you. Perhaps you could help take someone to a doctor's appointment, a lunch club or to visit friends and family. This simple task can help to transform someone else's life. We reimburse your petrol expenses.

VCC at the Make a Difference Awards
Thursday 4th March saw the first Make a Difference Award ceremony (held by Lewisham Council in
partnership with Volunteer Centre Lewisham) which celebrates the contribution that volunteers make
to the borough of Lewisham.

The VCC has many volunteers that deserve an award, so when approached by LB Lewisham it was extremely
difficult to choose which volunteers to nominate.
After much deliberation we made our nominations. Out of what must have been hundreds of nominees, our
volunteer Langridge was shortlisted to the final three in the category of "Supporting Others Community
Champion"
Congratulations to Pat Langridge (pictured left) our volunteer driver who won second place in the
nominated category.
Sponsored Walk Update & Abseil
Due to restricted resources at the VCC, we will not be holding a walk again this year.
However, we do have five people raising money for the VCC by participating in a Sponsored
Abseil on Sunday 4th July. The abseil will be down the side of Kings College Tower.

Valerie Oldfield (driving scheme co-ordinator) Katy Lucas, Emily Fletcher, Helen Belton and
Daniel Glass have all pledged to raise at least 200 each for the VCC.
We must give special mention to Valerie (our own staff member) and Helen. This is Helens
second ever abseil and at the age of 86 (first one completed at the tender age of 83) that
is no small challenge!
We are very proud of them all! If you would like to sponsor Valerie Oldfield or Helen Belton
you can visit their pages on the just giving website ( www.justgiving.com and search under their
names) to donate, or call 020 8291 1747 and speak to Sarah or Valerie to make your pledge.
Fundraising Quiz Night
On Friday 26th March, ten teams competed to be VCC quiz champions. Participants paid 5 each
to enter and contributed generously to our raffles.

The losing team won wonderfully decorated wooden spoons, whilst the winning team each took home a bottle of wine.
Everyone had an enjoyable fun evening, if not brain taxing at times.
The evening raised a fantastic 360. Following the success of this event, VCC will be holding a second quiz night
on Friday 3rd September. If you were unable to make the last event, make sure you dont miss out this time. To
book your places (teams of six) you should contact evelyn@voluntarycarecentre.co.uk or call her at the office
on 020 8291 1747.
VCC Referrers Day
On Wednesday March 10th, the VCC held their annual Referrers Day. This is an opportunity for
us to spread the word about the work of the VCC and ensure that other organisations have the
right information about what we do.
The day was well attended with referrers from mental health services, the NHS, social services,
charities and others.
Usually, staff would present the information. However, this year, to make the day more interesting
for the referrers, three of our volunteers got involved in the presenting. Our thanks to Ruth Bertie,
Ray Blackmore & Pat Langridge for a successful day.
March - Volunteer Support Session
On the afternoon of Wednesday 24th March, police support community officer Daryl Angus came to
talk to volunteers about many of the issues concerning local people in the Perry Vale Ward of
Lewisham.
Volunteers asked many pertinent questions about street crime, burglaries and what work was
being done in the local area. Daryl was able to talk about his duties and how they are
collaborating with many local organisations to ensure they are working effectively.

Latest Opportunities
Exciting new developments Deptford Drop-in Volunteers Needed!
(Comprehensive training and ongoing support will be provided).
From April 2010 the Voluntary Care Centre will be working in partnership with the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust at their Deptford Drop-in.
The drop-ins run Saturdays, 11am 2pm and Sundays, 12 3pm, and are a place where people experiencing mental health issues will find a warm and friendly environment. Each session is supported by a SLAM member of staff.
The VCC are looking to develop the service and by autumn of 2010 are aiming to launch a new programme called 'Stepping Stones in Lewisham'. The 10 week programme will run on a weekly basis at the drop-in (either on Saturday or Sunday), offering workshops, an assigned mentor, and support, within a group environment, inspiring people experiencing mental well being issues to work towards their personal goals and ambitions.
- Are you interested in making a difference to people in your community?
- Would you like to gain skills and experience in mental health work?
- Can you spare a few hours on a Saturday or Sunday from April 2010?
If you are interested, please contact Evelyn Brady at the VCC either by calling 020 8291 1747 or via email evelyn@voluntarycarecentre.co.uk
